Cricket then and now — how did it get so popular?

Just like most sports, cricket went through a lot of changes since it first appeared. It was, and still is to some, a very confusing game. On the other hand, there are cricket events happening all over the world, as we speak. If you’re a cricket enthusiast, you can always take a look at live cricket scores and fixtures.

It arrived in the US in the 17th century, and the first-ever international cricket match was played between the United States and Canada in 1844. This event is extremely important because it wasn’t only the first international cricket event — it was the first international sporting event in the world we now call modern.

How Popular Is Cricket?

Aside from soccer, we can easily say that cricket is one of the most popular sports. It’s actively played in all corners of the world. Even though it’s not defined by law, cricket is regarded as England’s national sport. Some people say cricket is their favorite pastime, while others call it a pseudoreligion.

Thanks to the British colonies, this sport has quickly taken over the world. Even though it’s not as widespread as soccer or basketball, cricket also has over 30 leagues known worldwide. Thanks to the formation of the Twenty20, or T20, this sport has gained much more attention, especially in India and large parts of Africa.

The Indian Premier League is, believe it or not, is among the most profitable leagues, with a revenue of over $4 billion US dollars. However, the presence of cricket is on the decline in the less economically developed countries. There is always room for improvement, so hopefully, we will see a lot more leagues appearing in the future.

How to Become a Skilled Cricket Player?

You know what they say — practice makes perfect. Naturally, not all people can have a talent for everything, and that includes the game of cricket. To some it might be the most confusing game ever, but to others it might make way more sense than other sports.

To be a good cricket player, you need to have good eye coordination. You must know where the ball is at all times so that you can then react accordingly. Then, you need to know how to throw a ball, and catch it as well. Just like in baseball, ball-throwing is considered a skill. Given the fact that a game of cricket can last from a couple of hours up to a few days, the ability to concentrate is crucial.

Just like with any other sport, if you want to be good at it, you can’t do it partially. First, you cover the basics, but then, you continue to learn and practice.

Cricket Leagues

We mentioned above that cricket is an extremely popular sport. Naturally, there are leagues and tournaments played even in some unexpected places, which is a good thing. Some of these events have an official status and are a part of the flagship T20 leagues. So, let’s take a closer look at the T20 cricket competitions:

  • Indian Premier League (IPL)
  • Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
  • Pakistan Super League (PSL)
  • T20 Blast — England
  • Super Smash — New Zealand
  • Big Bash League (BBL) — Australia
  • Lankan Premier League (LPL)
  • Mzansi Super League — South Africa
  • Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)
  • Afghanistan Premier League (APL)
  • Euro T20 Slam — Ireland, Scotland & Netherlands

On the world level, cricket has the Champion League Twenty20 (CLT20). It was created by the cricket authorities in India, South Africa, and Australia, and it was held annually. In the beginning, it seemed like a promising venture due to the cricket’s rise in popularity. Unfortunately, it was active only from 2008 until 2014. Due to a lack of interest from the public and unstable sponsorship deals, the event was canceled altogether.

Cricket is still alive and well and still present in a wide range of countries. With better and more stable conditions, we might see the return of the CLT20 in the future.
